　本賞は、日本の未来を拓く若手研究者の支援を目的として、東進ハイスクール等を運営する株式会社ナガセ（永瀬昭幸社長）の寄付により設立されたフロンティアサロン財団（代表理事宮田清蔵）において、我が国の科学技術の振興そして人類の未来への貢献に繋がる新しい挑戦の観点から最も優れた研究を行った研究者を選出して贈られる賞です。
　授賞式は帝国ホテル東京において開催され、贈呈記念として列席した約1000人の高校生を対象に特別講義・サイエンスセミナーも行われました。

本賞は、アジア太平洋物理学会連合 (AAPPS: Association of Asia Pacific Physical Societies) 発足の議長を務め、初代会長となったノーベル物理学賞学者である Chen Ning Yang 博士の名を冠した賞です。３年毎に AAPPS が主催して開催するアジア太平洋物理学会 (APPS: Asia Pacific Physics Conference) にあわせて、アジア太平洋地域の若手研究者から３名程度が受賞します。
