Professor Giauque received the 1949 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions
in thermodynamics, which included measurements on crystals confirming the
Third Law and the invention of adiabatic demagnetization. Giauque trained
a legion of students, who subsequently helped to establish and promote
calorimetry in academia, government labs, and industry. The Giauque Student
Awards, created in recognition of his outstanding mentoring ability, are
intended to encourage student participation in the Conference.
