Subject & Detail

Title:  "Electronic properties and some applications of MXenes from first-principles calculations"

Speaker: Prof. Mohammad Khazaei (Department of Physics, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran)

Abstract:
MXenes are a family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides that are obtained from chemical exfoliations of MAX phases. Considering the various elemental composition possibilities, surface functional tunability, various magnetic orders, and spin-orbit coupling, MXenes can truly be considered as multifunctional materials that can be used to realize various physical phenomena. In addition, owing to the large surface area, hydrophilicity, adsorption ability, and high surface reactivity, MXenes have attracted attention for numerous applications in catalysis, photocatalysis, batteries, water refining, water splitting, gas storage, gas sensors, biomedicine, advanced composite materials, and many others. While more than 30 MXenes have been synthesized, dozens of simple structures and thousands of alloys and complex compositions are possible in this system. Here, I provide some insights into trivial and nontrivial electronic structures [1,2,3], magnetic, work function, and surface state properties of MXenes as well as their possible applications as thermoelectric or piezoelectric materials [4].
